How do I choose the right boxing gloves?

There are several important characteristics to consider when choosing the right boxing gloves. There are boxing gloves designed for kickboxing and others that are suitable for boxing. Kickboxing gloves are flatter and harder, while boxing gloves are softer and rounder. While you can use many boxing gloves for kickboxing, it is not recommended the other way around! Using kickboxing gloves increases the risk of damaging the padding when hitting a punching bag. Your own body weight, material, and fit also play a role in choosing your perfect boxing gloves.

What size boxing gloves do I need?

The weight of boxing gloves is measured in OZ (ounce) and is related to your own body weight. Sizes range from 4 OZ (junior) to 20 OZ (adult man), increasing by 2 OZ increments. The fit and size of the gloves also play a role. The higher the OZ number, the larger the boxing glove on the inside.

Because your body weight is related to the boxing glove, there is a difference between junior and senior boxing gloves. If you are between 6 and 9 years old, it is best to choose boxing gloves from 4 OZ to 8 OZ (body weight up to 55 kg). Adult women, girls, and boys aged 9 to 14 are best suited with boxing gloves between 8 OZ and 12 OZ. Since women generally have smaller hands, sizes 10 and 12 OZ (body weight between 55 and 65 kg) fit best. An adult man weighing up to 70 kg can use 12 OZ boxing gloves. If you weigh more than 85 kg, opt for 16 OZ boxing gloves.

How should boxing gloves fit?

Once you have determined the size (expressed in OZ) you need, the fit is also an important factor. Remember that the right boxing glove should be snug but not too tight. If it feels tight, your boxing gloves are too small. Always try on your new boxing gloves with hand wraps or bandages to ensure you are buying the right gloves!

What are boxing gloves made of?

Boxing gloves can be made of synthetic leather, leather, or a combination of both. Synthetic leather gloves are suitable for beginners but are prone to wear and tear. If you are an advanced boxer and train more than twice a week, it is recommended to invest in real leather boxing gloves. Leather gloves last longer and are therefore more durable.

How do I maintain my boxing gloves?

If you want to enjoy your boxing gloves for as long as possible, it is advisable to clean them regularly! You can clean the outside of the gloves with a damp cloth. If you want to kill all bacteria, you can put the gloves in the freezer for a day.
