Nordic ice skates
What Are Nords?
Nords are designed for long-distance skating. With their long blades, Nords remain in contact with the ice for extended periods, allowing you to make long strides and maintain a high speed, which is essential for long-distance skating. However, there are different types of Nords, and to choose the right pair, consider the following points.
Nords with Hard Boots
In the past, Nords were only available with leather boots, but nowadays, you can find many people using Nords with (semi-)soft boots! Although the soft boot is taller than the original leather Nords, it still offers a high degree of freedom of movement, allowing you to maintain a low position. The higher boot provides excellent ankle support, ensuring that the Nords fit very securely.
Sharpening Nords
The blades of your Nords should always be sharp; dull blades provide less grip, making it harder to push off effectively. You can usually tell when the blades need sharpening by feel. It’s also wise to sharpen your Nords when transitioning from outdoor natural ice to indoor artificial ice.
Some skate blades are finished with a powder coating, which helps prevent rust formation.
What Size Nords Should I Buy?
If your Nords are too large, your feet may slide around, increasing the risk of blisters. When purchasing soft boots, you should still be able to move your toes; otherwise, they are too tight. For leather Nords, the boot can be a bit tighter around the toes, as they will stretch out over time. To ensure a good fit, you should try on the skates not only while sitting but also while standing in skating posture.
If you use insoles in your regular shoes, you don’t need to use them in your Nords, as you don’t need to roll your foot like you do when walking or running.
Tip
When skating, it’s best to wear thin, seamless socks that fit snugly around your feet. Depending on your preference, you can choose either high or low socks.
