Cycling Kids bikes
Learning to ride a bike
The Netherlands is known as a cycling country and it is important that a child learns to ride a bike well. Once your child has full control of the bike, it's time to (under supervision of course) hit the road. Some children pick it up faster than others, often the secret is that children who learn quickly have been riding a balance bike from a young age. A balance bike helps to develop the sense of balance.
After the balance bike
When a child is ready to transition to a real bike, start with a bike with training wheels. Training wheels can be gradually adjusted higher until they are no longer needed. To prevent accidents, it is important that the child can touch the ground with both feet.
The right children's bike
Children are less careful with their belongings, so it is important that a children's bike is sturdy and robust. If the bike looks fun, children will enjoy riding it more. That's why bikes are available in different colors and with various prints. Some bikes come with a metal rod, allowing you to push and hold your child while they ride.
The right size bike
Instead of buying a bike that the child will grow into, it is better to choose a bike that can grow with the child. These are bikes with an adjustable seat and handlebars. It is not wise to buy a bike that the child will grow into; it is better to get a bike that can 'grow' with the child. These bikes have adjustable seat and handlebars. This way, a child can enjoy the bike for a longer time.
The bike is properly adjusted when the arms are slightly bent when the child holds the handlebars. The leg on the lower pedal should also be slightly bent. If the child can ride the bike smoothly, they no longer need to have both feet flat on the ground. Make sure the ground can be reached when the child is sitting on the saddle and standing on their toes. This way, they can still catch themselves if they lose balance.
Tip
To ensure that there are no dangerous situations, it is wise to wear a bike helmet. A bike helmet protects the head in case of a fall or collision.
