How Many Layers of Ski Clothing Should Children Wear?

For your upper body, we recommend using the 3-layer system as a guideline. This system involves wearing multiple layers on top of each other to keep your body at the right temperature. Between the different layers, an air layer forms that provides warmth and comfort. The first layer you wear to stay warm is thermal clothing. Thermal clothing for kids is worn over your child’s underwear and should fit snugly. Thermal clothing ensures sweat is transported to the next layer, keeping your child’s body dry and warm.

What Ski Clothing Do Children Need?

Now that you know what the first layer consists of, let’s discuss the other two layers! For the second layer, you can opt for a kids' ski pullover or fleece. The air layer formed between the first and second layers has an insulating effect, keeping heat trapped inside. The sweat from the first layer is transported through to the third layer. If it’s very cold outside, you can also wear two mid-layers on top of each other. If the weather is warmer, this second layer is the first one to be removed.

The third layer consists of a ski jacket. A ski jacket for kids protects them from snow, rain, and wind and also transports sweat from the first two layers to the outside. Ski jackets can have useful extras, such as zippers for ventilation or a special pocket for the ski pass. Ski jackets for kids often come in bright colors, which is handy for you as a parent since it makes your child more visible in the snow.

Now for the Lower Body: Ski Pants for Kids

Since your lower body produces less heat and is less sensitive to cold, two layers are sufficient here. The first layer is a pair of thermal pants for kids, and the layer above it consists of ski pants. It’s important that your child can move easily in the ski pants and that no snow can get inside through the bottom of the pant legs.

All Set with Ski Suits for Kids

Did you know there are also ski suits for kids? This is ideal because you’re all set in one go and don’t have to buy a separate ski jacket and ski pants. The jacket and pants are attached, so no snow can get inside. It’s important to choose the right size to ensure that freedom of movement is not restricted. The range of ski clothing for kids is extensive, so every child, from young to old, can find the perfect ski outfit.

Almost Done, Just the Kids’ Ski Socks Left!

Finally, we come to the feet, as they also need to be kept warm and protected. Kids' ski socks have special padding in areas that endure the most during skiing, such as the shins and heels. Be sure to get the correct size, as the supportive parts won’t work properly, and you may end up with blisters.

Well-Prepared for Skiing

When you go skiing, you want to wear clothing that is warm and waterproof. The waterproofness of ski clothing for kids is measured in water columns, and you can find out the meaning of the different values in the overview below.

  • From 0 mm: The ski clothing for kids is water-repellent but not waterproof.
  • From 1,000 mm: The ski clothing for kids keeps water out but is not resistant to pressure. For example, if you sit on a wet chair, the ski clothing will eventually leak.
  • From 2,000 mm: The ski clothing for kids stays waterproof even during longer snow showers, but it will leak under pressure.
  • From 5,000 mm: The ski clothing for kids is resistant to long and intense weather. Even under high pressure, it stays waterproof. However, under prolonged high pressure, it might leak.
  • From 15,000 mm: The ski clothing for kids is resistant to heavy snow showers, and even underwater, it will keep you dry.

Make sure the ski clothing you bring for kids is breathable and provides good ventilation. This ensures that your child doesn’t get too hot too quickly, and when they do, the sweat is carried away to the outside. In short, the waterproof layer allows moisture to escape from the inside out but not the other way around.

Tips

Taped seams ensure that water cannot enter through the seams of ski jackets and ski pants.
