What size wetsuit do I need?

The size of the wetsuit is very important, as the wetsuit should fit snugly around the body. If the wetsuit is too loose, too much water can enter the wetsuit and it loses its functionalities. The wetsuit is made of neoprene, this material can still stretch and the material also expands slightly when it comes into contact with water. When trying on the wetsuit, it can be a bit tight!

How thick should the wetsuit be?

As soon as children start feeling cold, they often have less fun and may want to go home. Of course, you want to prevent that! In the summer, a wetsuit with a thickness of 3mm is usually sufficient, as it is more focused on protecting the body from UV radiation from the sun and other external influences. On colder autumn or spring days, you definitely need a wetsuit that is 5mm thick. In general, the thicker the wetsuit, the better it can keep the body warm.

What material are wetsuits made of?

Wetsuits are made of a highly insulating material, namely neoprene. Neoprene is a flexible type of rubber that has made significant improvements in recent years. A common misconception about wetsuits is that they keep the body dry, but neoprene is not water-repellent. The wetsuit actually lets a small amount of water through. The body will immediately warm this layer of water and then the insulating wetsuit will ensure that the body stays at the right temperature.

Tip

A wetsuit does not have a buoyant function. To ensure that your child always stays afloat, it is best to have them wear a life jacket over the wetsuit!
