Size and Weight of a Football
When purchasing a football, pay close attention to the size and weight of the ball! Especially for young players, using a ball that is too heavy can be a strain on their muscles and joints! Field and street footballs are generally size 5, with the weight of the ball ranging from 290 grams for players under 8 years old to a maximum of 450 grams for senior players. The weight distribution of the balls is as follows:
- Seniors – 450 grams
- Youth 15-18 years – 370-450 grams
- Youth 10-15 years – 320-370 grams
- Youth under 10 years – 290 grams (size 4 ball).
Material of a Football
The outer layer of a football is often made of PVC or polyurethane. All match balls are made of polyurethane, which is a durable and abrasion-resistant material. Additionally, a polyurethane ball remains playable in various weather conditions. PVC balls will wear out faster and are less playable in cold and rainy conditions, so it is recommended to store these balls indoors when temperatures drop! Outdoor footballs have a strong bounce, making the game faster and more unpredictable.
Football Balls with Certification
Some footballs have an official certification, visible by the stamp on the ball. The balls may carry one of the following certifications:
- FIFA Quality PRO
- FIFA Quality
- International Match Standard (IMS)
These certifications are a good indicator of the quality level of the ball, meaning it is top quality. Before a ball receives such a certification, it is tested for weight, circumference, water absorption, and shape retention in different temperatures.
