Men Thermal sets
The Base Layer
A thermal set consists of a thermal shirt and thermal pants and is worn as a base layer. Aside from underwear, thermal clothing sits closest to the skin. The purpose of thermal clothing is to wick away sweat and keep your body at the right temperature. This is achieved by creating an insulating air layer between your skin and the thermal set. The thinner the fabric of the thermal clothing and the tighter it fits your body, the smaller this air layer is, and the more the focus is on moisture wicking. Conversely, the thicker the fabric and the looser the set fits your body, the larger the air layer and the more the focus is on warmth. During winter sports, do not wear an overly thick thermal set, as you will already become warm from the physical activity. Dressing in layers ensures that you stay warm enough.
Over the base layer, you put on a second layer, which can consist of a ski pullover, fleece, or sweater. This second layer has an insulating effect; it retains heat and further wicks away sweat to the next layer. Over this second layer, you wear a ski jacket, which protects against snow, rain, and wind.
Your lower body only needs two layers. By wearing ski pants over your thermal pants, your body will stay warm, dry, and comfortable.
The Material
Most thermal sets are made of polyester or Merino wool. Both fabrics have the main properties of effectively wicking moisture, being lightweight, and drying quickly. An added advantage of polyester is that it retains its shape well, while Merino wool is non-itchy and stays fresh for a long time.
Additionally, many thermal sets feature stretch, which provides an even more comfortable fit. Flat seams also enhance wearing comfort.
Tip
To maintain the quality and properties of the thermal set, it is important to wash it according to the care instructions. The instructions can be found on the label inside the thermal set.
