Trail Shoes vs Running Shoes

If you're running on a paved path and occasionally cross a small stretch of unpaved trail, it’s not a problem, and you don’t need special trail shoes. However, if you’re going trail running, the situation is different—unpaved terrain requires different qualities than an asphalt road!

When running on hard surfaces, your joints endure a shock with each step of about 3 to 5 times your body weight. On unpaved trails, this impact is much less, meaning you need less cushioning from your shoes. However, you’ll need more grip on unpaved trails due to slippery and unpredictable surfaces. Trail shoes for women, in comparison to standard running shoes, offer less cushioning but provide more grip.

Wearing trail shoes for regular road running is strongly discouraged. The likelihood is high that you’ll wear out the tread on hard roads, which would be a shame! Additionally, trail shoes do not provide enough cushioning to absorb the impact of landing on hard ground, and you may find yourself injured quickly.

Good Trail Shoes

Did you know that you can tell from the tread of trail shoes what type of terrain they are designed for? If the trail shoes have large lugs with lots of space between them, they are ideal for soft or even wet trails. These shoes ensure a firm footing, preventing you from slipping easily. On the other hand, if the shoe has smaller, more numerous lugs, it offers excellent grip on smooth or harder surfaces.
