Football shin guards
Why Wear Shin Guards?
Football is a physical sport with a lot of physical contact, which can lead to various injuries. In 1999, the KNVB (Royal Dutch Football Association) mandated that shin guards be worn during matches. Since then, lower leg injuries, ranging from abrasions and bruises to fractures, have decreased by 25%. Although the KNVB does not require shin guards to be worn during training, they strongly recommend it.
How Should Shin Guards Fit?
It’s important that shin guards are comfortable to wear. They should allow for enough freedom of movement and not be bothersome. To ensure mobility, it’s not advisable to buy shin guards that are too large. The shin guards should cover at least three-quarters of the lower leg and extend no more than 5 centimeters below the knee. The best shin guards are made of hard plastic and include ankle protection through an ankle sock.
How to Wash Shin Guards?
Clean shin guards regularly. You can wash them in a bucket of lukewarm water with a bit of detergent or green soap. Shin guards can also be washed in a machine, but on a low temperature setting (max 30 degrees Celsius). Place the shin guards in a wash bag to prevent damage to the Velcro.
Tips
To ensure shin guards stay in place, use special elastic bands that prevent shifting. These Guard Stay bands can be found here.
After use, don’t leave the shin guards in your bag; hang them up instead. This allows them to air out and helps prevent bacterial growth.
